At 6pm this evening, Tuesday 12th May, Oban lifeboat launched, following concerns for the wellbeing of the owners of a yacht.

Oban lifeboat was requested to launch by Stornoway Coastguard at 6pm to investigate a sailing vessel on a mooring at Melfort Pier, Kilmelford.

The yacht still had its tender tied astern, sparked concerns by a member of the public after the owners had not been spotted for a few days.

The volunteer crew of Oban lifeboat arrived on scene and located the vessel by 6.58pm. It soon became clear that the two persons on board were safe and well; and had been awaiting better weather before setting sail again.

Mora Edith Macdonald, the Oban lifeboat, proceeded back to her berth in Oban where she was refueled and made ready for service again by 8.20pm.

This was a false alarm with good intent, but the outcome could have been very different.

RNLI always urges anyone to raise the alarm if they have concerns for another vessel or person’s safety at sea.
